A Day In The Life Of
Today was a very good day, although there were a few events that had a lot of people a little nervous.
I live in the deep Southern part of California and today there was an earthquake north of me in Chino Hills near Los Angeles, CA. It measured 5.4 on the rector scale.
It is said to be the largest earthquake to strike a populated area in California since the one in Northridge, California in 1994. The earthquake stretched as far south as San Diego, CA and the Baja peninsula.
It was reported that it rocked and rolled in parts of California with 2.8 to 3.6 aftershocks for up to 30 minutes.
I heard about it from the news channels, but I must say that I didn’t feel any of it and I’m glad there wasn’t much damage done anywhere and there were no fatalities.
As I listened to some of the people that were interviewed on television I was a bit surprised and amazed at some of the things they had to say.
Firstly, nobody was hurt or injured and the news media and others keep talking about “THE BIG ONE” that is going to hit California one day.
I would think that living in that area of California and knowing that earthquakes happen more in that part of the state and further north than any other part of the state, most people would at least be somewhat prepared.
However, when asked how prepared they were for an earthquake, the one thing that stood out the most was the fact that they all said though this earthquake was a sizable one they were caught totally unprepared.
Reflecting on the events of the day made me realize how vulnerable we all are at any given moment and that we should always be prepared “just in case” something happens that is out of our control.
We rarely get earthquakes in the part of California where I live. However, my husband and I had been discussing for a while now the fact that it we should put together an “earthquake preparedness kit.”
So—I decided that today would be that day. I went out to get all of the items that we would need for an “earthquake preparedness kit” and was pleasantly surprised that it was a very easy task to accomplish.
Most of the places I checked already had most of the kit together and/or had a list of all the things you would need in the kit as well as some items that weren’t necessarily mandatory but were suggested to be items that would be good to have.
After we put the kit together, we decided that the best thing to do with it would be to keep it in our vehicle so that should we need it one day, we won’t have to run around looking for it because we had “put it away somewhere.”
We also decided that since we have more than one vehicle, the smart thing to do would be to place a kit in each of them, which is what we did. That way we know that we’re totally prepared no matter what, and “just in case” we’re in two different places when and if something should happen.
Earthquakes are nothing to play with and the best thing to do is to make sure that you’re prepared and have the things you’ll need already together before you need them – “just in case.”

Angela
